is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education,
and standards of living for countries worldwide.
» The HDI for each country
is then calculated as an average of the three indices which include the life
expectancy index, the gross enrollment index and the gross domestic
product.

It
[Human Development Index] is used to distinguish whether the country is a developed,
a developing or an underdeveloped country, and
also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life.
» The results of the HDI
are published in the Human Development Report, which is commissioned by the
United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and is written by scholars, those who
study world development and members of the Human Development Report Office of
the UNDP.
» The HDI was developed by
the Pakistani economist Mahbub
ul Haq working alongside Indian economist Amartya
Sen.
» The United
Nations has calculated the HDI for its member states since 1975
