Nuclear Power Plants in India

» A nuclear power plant or nuclear power station is a thermal power station in which the heat source is a nuclear reactor. As is typical in all conventional thermal power stations the heat is used to generate steam which drives a steam turbine connected to an electric generator which produces electricity.
» Nuclear power is the fourth-largest source of electricity in India after thermal, hydroelectric and renewable sources of electricity.
» As of 2016, India has 22 nuclear reactors in operation in 8 nuclear power plants, having an installed capacity of 6780 MW and producing a total of 30,292.91 GWh of electricity while 6 more reactors are under construction and are expected to generate an additional 4,300 MW.
» In October 2010, India drew up "an ambitious plan to reach a nuclear power capacity of 63,000 MW in 2032", but, after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, "populations around proposed Indian NPP sites have launched protests, raising questions about atomic energy as a clean and safe alternative to fossil fuels".
» There have been mass protests against the French-backed 9900 MW Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project in Maharashtra and the Russian-backed 2000 MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu.
» Currently, twenty-two nuclear power reactors have a total install capacity of 6,780 MW (3.5% of total installed base).
All the twenty-two nuclear power reactors with an installed capacity of 6,780 MW equal to 2.2% of total installed utility capacity are operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. India ranked seventh in number of operated reactors (22) and fourteenth in total installed capacity.

Nuclear Power Plants in MP

  • The Chutka Nuclear Power Plant is a proposed nuclear power plant to be built on a 1,200 acres (490 ha) area, near Chutka Village of Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. The site is near Kanha National Park, one of the tiger reserves of India and the largest national park of Madhya Pradesh state in India.
  • The project will have an installed capacity of 1400 Megawatt.

How many nuclear power plants are there in India?

As of 2016, India has 21 nuclear reactors in operation in 7 nuclear power plants, having an installed capacity of 6780 MW and producing a total of 30,292.91 GWh of electricity while 6 more reactors are under construction and are expected to generate an additional 4,300 MW.

Which is the first nuclear power plant in India?

Tarapur Atomic Power Station (T.AP.S.) was the first nuclear power plant in India. The construction of the plant was started in 1962 and the plant went operational in 1969.

Which is the biggest (in terms of installed capacity) nuclear power plant of India?

Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project is currently the largest power station in India with two units each of 1000MW in operation and 4 more planned. So that makes 2 x 1000MW generation with 4 x 1000MW under construction.
